Sidney's first STEM summer school

Sidney Sussex has hosted 24 talented sixth-form students for a four-day summer school in Physics, Engineering and Mathematics.

The course was organised jointly with Christ's College, with input from Fellows and graduate students of both colleges.  Each college hosted students from their link areas (in Sidney's case, Lancashire, Warrington, Greater Manchester, Stafford, Cumbria and the London borough of Kensington and Chelsea) and the groups joined together for lectures, lab classes and supervision-style teaching in the University departments.

There were also a range of social activities on offer, including punting, a gala dinner and quiz night. Attendance at the summer school was free for all the participants, thanks to the generous support of Dr Simon and Mrs Jill Campbell, and the Donald Green Fund for Engineering.

The summer school received enthusiastic feedback from the participants, who enjoyed the opportunity to meet other sixth-formers interested in science subjects. Many also commented that it had improved their perception of Cambridge and strengthened their desire to apply. Following this year's success, we hope to extend the summer school next year to include arts and social science subjects.
