Sidney alumna inspires new generation

Sidney alumna Sakthy Selvakumaran seeks to inspire a new generation of engineers and manufacturers.

As part of a government initiative Make it in Great Britain, earlier this summer the then Minister of State for Business and Enterprise Mark Prisk unveiled a list of thirty talented individuals working in manufacturing who are all under the age of thirty. 

Sidney alumna Sakthy Selvakumaran, who works for the engineering firm Ramboll, was named as one of the '30 Under 30'.

Cited for their 'passion, enthusiasm and ambition', the group is tasked with acting as ambassadors for the Make it in Great Britain campaign, which aims to change the way people view manufacturing as well as inform and educate a new generation about the jobs and prospects that are available in the manufacturing sector. 

A passionate advocate of Engineering as a route into a wide range of careers and opportunities, Sakthy recently visited the University's Department of Engineering to speak to year 12 students attending a summer workshop. Her visit has been featured in an article on the University News website, where she explains how through mentoring and speaking at similar events she hopes to encourage students from minority ethnic groups and disadvantaged areas to consider applying to study at university.
