Ann Dowling, Fellow in Engineering and head of the University's Engineering Department, has been honoured with an outstanding achievement award by the UKRC, a body which works to advance gender equality in science, engineering and technology.

Professor Dowling was presented with the Inspiration and Leadership in Academia and Research Award in a ceremony at the Royal Society of Engineering.

Professor Dowling works in aeronautics, cited by the UKRC as being a branch of engineering where female representation is particularly low. She is the UK lead of the Silent Aircraft Initiative, a collaboration between researchers at Cambridge and MIT, which is working to design ultra-low noise and fuel efficient aircraft.
