Britain and the EU: What happens next?

There has been much talk since last week’s EU Referendum about the mechanism by which Britain can extract itself from the European Union: namely Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty. Triggering Article 50 will set in train Britain’s withdrawal, but the timing of such an action remains a point for debate.

Ahead of the Referendum Sidney Fellow and Director of the Centre for European Legal Studies Kenneth Armstrong penned an analysis of the legal options and constraints around Article 50. That opinion has been widely cited in the media in recent days, in outlets including The Guardian, The Canadian Globe and Mail and CNN.
