  • Head Chef, Stephen Mather, with the TUCO awardSidney chef wins top culinary award

    Sidney's Head Chef, Stephen Mather, representing Cambridge Colleges won the prestigious TUCO Chef of the Year event winning a Gold Medal at the Hotelympia Exhibition at EXCEL, London on Wednesday 20th January 2008. Stephen beat off stiff competition in the finals from executive Chefs from universities including Oxford, York, Derby, Nottingham, Leeds, Aston, Kiel and Sheffield. Stephen Mather was required to prepare a 3-course meal suitable for a Dean and VIP guests. He was ably assisted by a young Chef, Phillip Crouch also from Sidney Sussex College. All dishes had to be prepared from raw ingredients, cooked and served within a 90-minute period. (Full story)

    Sandra Dawson, Lindsay Greer, Tom Blundell and Keith Glover were amongst more than twenty senior colleagues who joined The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge, Professor Alison Richard, on a two week visit to India in January 2008 which involved activities in New Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai.   • The winning team of chefsSidney Chefs Win Annual College Contest

    This afternoon, the College's team of Chefs won the Steward's Cup for the best overall team effort in the Cambridge College Chefs Competition. This annual event was held at Girton College. Every member of our kitchen brigade entered at least one class with some outstanding results. The small team from Sidney Sussex beat off stiff competition from Trinity, Emmanuel and St Johns.   • Charles Larkum Memorial Concert

    A memorial concert for Charles Larkum (Bursar, Sidney Sussex College, 1994-2006), will be held on Saturday, 17 November 2007 in the College Chapel. The event will run from 2.30 to 4.30pm with a substantial interval, when light refreshments will be served. (Full story)

  • Arthur J. HerderArthur J. Herder (1902) remembered

    Arthur J.Herder came to Sidney in 1902 to read Law. A keen athlete, rugby player and rower, he graduated in 1905. After working as a lawyer in Canada, he served in the Great War with the Royal Newfoundland Regiment. He was killed in December 1917 at Cambrai, France. (Full story)

  • 2007 College Reading Competition

    Described by one (foreign) graduate student witnessing it for the first time as 'a very British kind of event', last month's annual College Reading Competition was a lively affair, with readers of the highest quality competing in three rounds. For the first time the competition was held in the Audit Room, by courtesy of the Master, a room whose splendid acoustic is ideal for the spoken word. (Full story)
