In a wide-ranging interview with Times Higher Education Professor Dame Ann Dowling - who is head of the Department of Engineering and has been nominated by the council of the Royal Academy of Engineering to become its next president - argues for a reappraisal of the value of applied research.

If research is to make a difference, funding needs to carry on until an idea is ready to be implemented, she says, rather than simply looking for what is the next new thing.
