Sidney economist appointed to parliamentary review role

Fellow and Director of Studies in Economics Professor Monojit Chatterji has been appointed as a lay member of the Speaker’s Committee for the Independent Parliament Standards Authority (IPSA).

Professor Chatterji’s research interests include unemployment, growth economics, trade unions and inflation. In recent years he has also conducted review work – which is ongoing - on remuneration on behalf of the Welsh Assembly, and will be employing that experience in his new role on the Speaker’s Committee.

Independent of government, IPSA was created by Parliament following the review into MPs’ expenses, and holds powers to regulate pay and pensions. The recommendation to appoint Professor Chatterji was considered on 8 January, and was put to the House of Commons on 13 January without debate.

The post will last for a period of three years, from 16 January 2014.
