9 October 2021 - Sidney Sussex Society exclusive visit to the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology (MAA).

Founded in 1884, the MAA displays humanity’s history over hundreds of thousands of years across the world, including the local history and archaeology of Cambridge. The Museum’s first collections were made in the course of fieldwork, donations from former students, purchases through the art market, and exchanges with museums in different countries. However, increasingly, collections are ‘co-produced’, meaning those who are featured consider how they wish to be represented and can create artefacts and art works for the MAA on commission. Over the past 20 years, the Museum has built an increasingly important collection of contemporary art, which represents Indigenous practitioners who lack visibility in UK art institutions.

This event will include a tour of the Museum, during which Dr Anita Herle, Senior Curator and Reader in Museum Anthropology, will outline the history of the MAA and its collections and discuss some of the highlights of the recently redisplayed ‘Pacific Currents’ exhibit.

The day will also feature lectures from Sidney Fellows, including Dr Rupert Stasch who will present ‘Pacific Islanders in Tourism and TV: Journey to the Stone Age?’. Rupert’s presentation will focus on his celebrated fieldwork among European tourists and television crews visiting Korowai people of West Papua, whose amazing treehouses have been widely seen in National Geographic Magazine and BBC shows like Human Planet and My Year with the Tribe. How do Pacific Islanders deal with people who visit them oriented by those stereotypes?

The event is scheduled to begin at 10.30am and will finish at approximately 1.00pm.

11.00am - 11.45am: lectures from Sidney Fellows in anthropology and archaeology

12.00pm - 1.00pm - tour of the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, Downing Site

Tickets are £15 per person.

Please note that lunch is not included in this event and attendees should make their own arrangements if they wish to meet for lunch in Cambridge. Anyone wishing to return to the Museum after the event will need to pre-book tickets through the MAA.

*Refreshments and lectures will be held either at the McDonald Institute on Downing Site or in Sidney Sussex College. This will be communicated to ticketholders closer to the event.

25 September 2021: 1965 and earlier matriculation reunion dinner

For those who matriculated in 1965 or before

On behalf of the College, it gives me great pleasure to write to invite you to your Alumni Reunion at Sidney on Saturday 25 September 2021. The event will be the first held at the College since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, and we would be delighted if you are able to join us for what promises to be a very special occasion.

Alumni reunions are a wonderful way to meet old friends, reminisce about life at Sidney and catch up on the events that have shaped your lives since graduation: all of which, I am sure, will be particularly welcome after the difficulties of the last 12 months and more.

As is traditional at our reunions, your spouse or partner and other family members are welcome to join us for afternoon tea in the Cloister Court Gardens between 3.30 and 5.30 pm, so that they too can enjoy the atmosphere of the College. The dinner reunion will commence with pre-dinner drinks at 7 pm on the new Master’s terrace.

We anticipate that this event , given the recent restrictions, will be a very popular one. Partners, spouses or another family member would very much be welcome to also attend the dinner, though we do, of course, unfortunately have limited capacity. If you would like to attend dinner with a guest, please do indicate this on the booking form, and the Development Office will be glad to relay if this is a possibility when we are able to confirm the level of interest in this part of the event.

You will be pleased to hear that a number of familiar faces from your time here are still at the College including Professor Derek Beales (1955), Professor Tim Blanning (1965) and Mr Donald Green (1966). There have also been a number of significant changes at Sidney; in recent years, we have made a number of improvements to the College, none of which would have been possible without the support of our alumni and friends. As you are may already be aware, in 2017 the College embarked on an ambitious project to relocate the kitchen beneath the Master’s Garden and create a second dining space. We hope that you will enjoy viewing the now completed project during the informal tours of the gardens and buildings to take place after the afternoon tea.

        Filming and photography

Please be aware that there will be filming and photography at events, which may be shared on the College’s website and social media and also on the Sidney Flickr account (which can be viewed by the general public).

Any guests who do not wish to be filmed or photographed should inform a member of the Development and Membership Office on the day or email before the event.

       Amendments to alumni events

Once you have booked for an event online, our system does not allow changes to be made to your booking form or personal details.

Please note refunds will not usually be issued for cancellations after the closing date for the event has passed or for non-attendance on the day.

Regrettably, we cannot refund guests when bad weather prevents or discourages travel.

All refund requests must be made by the person who made the original booking or the credit/debit card holder.

Please contact the Development and Membership Office in writing (by e-mail or post) if you wish to enquire about a refund.

Should circumstances arise which cause an event to be postponed, guests will have the option to either receive a full refund or transfer registration to the same event at any new date.
