After the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 Boat Race, exciting plans for 2021 are now taking shape. The race is scheduled to take place on the River Great Ouse at Ely on Sunday 4 April.

Faye Effard, SSBC’s Publicity Officer, is here to let us know more about Sidney’s involvement with the University squad and 2021 Boat Race.

“This will mark the 166th men’s race, and the 75th women’s race, and as a historic first, both races will be umpired by women.

Selection for the races is yet to be made, but Sidney is proud to have three of our own students/alumni in the Blues squad this year. We wish them well with their training and with selection for the main event.

Introducing the Sidney members who are in the Blues squad and up for selection against Oxford:

Phyllis Chan

Phyllis Chan, currently undertaking a Masters in World History, signed up to SSBC in Freshers’ Week. Since then, Phyllis has triumphantly gone from novicing to then coxing both the first Men’s and Women’s VIII’s in SSBC.

Hugo Durward

Hugo Durward has impressively been rowing since the young age of 13. Now in his third year of undergraduate Economics, he has since raced and went on to win with Goldie 2019.

Kate Shipley

Kate Shipley was previously a Sidney undergraduate in Architecture and is now a third year Engineer at Wolfson. Kate has very exciting prospects ahead. As a veteran rower, first trying out the sport in 2012, she previously competed in the Boat Race as the spare in 2018 and the spare pair in 2019.

Yeah Sidney!”
