The Sidney Choir recently travelled to Italy to perform in Cinque Terre and the surrounding towns.

An action packed week saw the Choir perform four concerts over five days in the idyllic seaside towns of Vernazza, Monterosso and Bonassola, as well as a widely publicised concert as part of the annual choral festival in Levanto.

An impromptu performance on the first day in the busy main square of Vernazza secured large and appreciative audiences of tourists and locals alike for the rest of the week, with many returning to watch the Choir perform on more than one occasion. An emotional last performance for many of the leavers was made even better by a rousing standing ovation.

The significant hard work put into rehearsals, services, and concerts during the academic year was rewarded by a wonderful time relaxing on the beach, swimming and sampling the local cuisine, especially the region’s famous pesto.

On Saturday, the Choir had a free day to embark on the hiking trail which links the Cinque Terra and offers panoramic views of the coast. Although they set off at an impressive speed, the combination of substantial hills, high temperatures and a lunchtime eating pizza defeated all but one member of the Choir at the second town!

These tours are always a highlight of the Choir’s calendar, and preparations are already under way for the Christmas tour to Singapore and Malaysia.

The Director of Music is always eager to hear from singers who are interested in joining. There are still spaces available for all voice parts for the next academic year. Please contact musicadministrator@sid.cam.ac.uk to arrange an audition.
