Sidney Engineering Fellow, Professor Dame Ann Dowling, has been elected as a Foreign Associate of the US National Academy of Engineering.

Professor Dowling was one of nine Foreign Associates to be elected to the Academy on the 8th February, bringing the total number of such Associates to 194. The citation accompanying her election highlighted Professor Dowling's 'advances in acoustics and unsteady flow' as well as her 'leadership in collaborative research between industry and universities', and reflects her position as both Head of the Aeronatical Division of the University's Department of Engineering and Head of the Rolls Royce University Gas Turbine Partnership.

Her work on developing 'silent aircraft' that have a greatly reduced noise output and which are also more efficient in their use of energy has received significant press attention in recent years. She also recently chaired the Royal Academy of Engineering / Royal Society Commission that investigated the issues associated with the development of Nanotechnology.
