Master announces new role

The Master to expand his work at Herculaneum.

The Master of Sidney Sussex, Professor Andrew Wallace-Hadrill, has announced his intention to resign from the Mastership at the end of the academic year 2012-13. Professor Wallace-Hadrill has combined his duties as Master with the role of helping the Packard Humanities Institute plan and manage a major conservation project at Herculaneum. In an exciting new development, David Packard has asked him to take a more active role in helping explore further steps, including a potential new museum at Herculaneum.

In order to concentrate on this major opportunity, Professor Wallace-Hadrill will take up the position of Director of Research in the Faculty of Classics and also become a Fellow at Sidney.

Professor Wallace-Hadrill said "It has been a great privilege to be Master of the College over the last three years, and Jo and I have much appreciated the characteristic warmth and friendliness of the Sidney community. I am pleased that it has been possible to find a way of maintaining my ties with the College while having the freedom to follow the Herculaneum Project more closely for the Packard Humanities Institute."

Responding on behalf of the College, the Vice Master Professor Richard Penty said "It is a sad day for Sidney to have Andrew step down as Master but this sadness is alleviated by the news of his role in the expanded project at Herculaneum. We wish him well with this new venture and are particularly pleased that he will remain at Sidney as a Fellow so that we can share in some small way in his future success."
