Sidney Engineering Fellow, Professor Dame Ann Dowling, was awarded an honorary science doctorate by Trinity College Dublin at a ceremony on the 12th December 2008 at which five honorary degrees were awarded by the University, with other recipients including the author, Terry Pratchett, and the naturalist, Sir David Attenborough.

Professor Dowling's degree was awarded in regognition of her pioneering work on low emission and quiet vehicles, perhaps most notably through the 'Silent Aircraft Initiative', which, incollaboration with MIT, has led to a radical new proposal for the design of aircraft that can significantly reduce noise and improve energy efficiency.
