New book by Professor Christopher Page.

The University of Cambridge’s Research News website has profiled the work of Sidney Sussex Fellow in English Professor Christopher Page.

The Guitar in Tudor England: A Social and Musical History, recently published by Cambridge University Press, is the first part of a projected trilogy examining the history of the guitar in England. Indeed, this book began as the background study to the instrument’s importance in the music of the Stuart’s culture and Court. Such was the richness of the archive record, and the compelling story of its cultural significance that emerged, Professor Page decided to devote attention to its study.

The book examines the rise of the instrument’s popularity, its performance, its status and its representation in culture from art to furniture.
