Sidney Sussex is one of four Cambridge Colleges to achieve a Gold Award for environmental improvements to its Catering Services.

Sidney Sussex received the award at a presentation event held at Emmanuel College on 31st July 2013.

The awards are sponsored by Transition Cambridge and the environmental charity Cambridge Carbon Footprint

The environmental assessment is based on a review of college menus, use of local and sustainable produce and the efficient recycling of food waste and refuse.

The Catering team’s initiatives have included reducing the amount of frozen produce in favour of daily deliveries of fresh food and recycling waste oil into bio-diesel.  The judges were particularly impressed by the use of meats from Denham Estate and the College’s home-grown herbs.

The Head Chef, Stephen Mather, said 'I’m delighted with the award but there is always much more to do.  Our focus on sustainable fish, use of local produce and promoting vegetarian dishes has been well received by customers.'
