In recognition of his work in science, and of his role in promoting Bari's image in the world, Professor John Walker has been awarded the gold seal of the University of Bari Aldo Moro and the keys to the city of Bari.

John Walker is currently the director of the Medical Research Council's Mitochondrial Biology Unit and is a Fellow in Natural Sciences. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1997 for his work examining the genetic code of mitochondria. John spoke about his research at the Sidney Society's Christmas reception at the Royal Society in December 2010.
