Shakespeare in Swahililand

Sidney book launch for Edward Wilson-Lee.

Fellow in English Dr Edward Wilson-Lee has celebrated the publication of his new book with a special launch in Sidney Sussex. The book, the culmination of travel and research, offers a particularly distinctive angle on the global appeal of Shakespeare in this 400th anniversary year of the celebrated playwright's death.

Published by Harper Collins, Dr Wilson-Lee's book weaves personal narrative and fieldwork in Africa to tell the extraordinary story of how Shakespeare's works played a central part in the cultural and political history of the region, being carried by explorers, performed by railway labourers, translated by independence fighters, and contested during the cold war.
