Network Connections

First make sure your computer is capable of being connected. If you have an Ethernet port on your computer you can be connected to the University network. This port is slightly larger than a modem connection. Whatever computer you have You MUST use an RJ-45 Cable to connect to the network.

Laptop:
Typical Laptop

If you do not have the Ethernet port for a laptop you will need to purchase a pcmcia Ethernet card and cable.  The college can sell you one for £50.

Desktop/Tower:
Typical Desktop/Tower

If your desktop/Tower does not have an Ethernet card then you will have to purchase the card and cable for your computer and have the card installed. The college can sell you one for £20.

After your Ethernet card is installed and working you will need an IP number to access the network. To obtain an IP number E-Mail computer@sid.cam.ac.uk with the following information: Your name, location and room number, what type computer (laptop/desktop), operating system (WinXX, Apple os X.X, linux) and your user ID which you received from computing services.

Within a week you will receive a reply similar to: Notification
