The 2010 Annual Fund
Dear Sidney Member,
Since joining Sidney Sussex in September, I have been impressed by the College’s powerful sense of community and of educational mission.
Today, as in past generations, Sidney offers able young people (many from state and grammar schools and modest family backgrounds), the opportunity to realise their talents and contribute to their communities through the skills and knowledge they gain.
Among the highlights of a successful year, we have published the first modern, illustrated history of the College: Sidney Sussex College: A History, by Richard Humphreys (English, 1972), and we are grateful to the many alumni subscribers who helped to make this possible. Sidney has become one of Cambridge’s most musically accomplished Colleges, attracting student musicians of the highest calibre. After two highly acclaimed recordings of the music of Thomas Tomkins and Ludwig Senfl, the Choir will travel to Spain on 20-21 March to perform at the Caravaca de la Cruz festival and in Murcia. Their summer tour to Italy (26 June to 10 July) will include Genoa and the Italian Riviera, Florence and Rome.
In 2010, we will begin a new phase of planning for the College’s future, keeping always in mind Sidney’s traditional strengths, and the values of its larger community of Members: alumni, students and Fellows.
As Master, I pledge to reaffirm Sidney’s historical educational mission: to give students of unusual potential an opportunity to develop their gifts and contribute to society at the highest levels.
I urge you to make a contribution, however modest, to our 2010 Annual Fund (a brochure is attached). Your generosity will help to ensure that our students continue to have access to the best in education.
I look forward to meeting you, and to learning what Sidney has meant to you.
With very best wishes,
Dr Andrew Wallace-Hadrill OBE
Master
