Professor Emerita, formerly Master of Sidney Sussex College, 1999-2009, and within the University of Cambridge: Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Chair of the Cambridge India Advisory Group , KPMG Professorship of Management Studies, 1995-2013, and Director of Judge Business School, 1995-2006

She writes and teaches on leadership, governance, and the management of change and is author of numerous articles and several books.

She is a Trustee of the American University of Sharjah, chair of the Advisory Board of the University of Cambridge Museum of Zoology, and member of the Advisory Board of Cambridge Judge Business School. She has held chair, nonexecutive or member positions on the Boards of Barclays plc, the FSA, TSB Bank, Oxfam, the Social Science Research Council (USA), Riverside Mental Health NHS Trust, J P Morgan Fleming Claverhouse Investment Trust,The UK Advanced Institute of Management, The UK India Roundtable, the Advisory Board of the UK India Business Council,  the Public Health Laboratory Service, Rand Europe (Uk), the Senior Salaries Review Body, the ESRC Research Priorities Board, the DTI Task Force ‘Accounting for People’, Cambridge Econometrics, the Fire and Rescue Service Ministerial Sounding Board, and the External Advisory Committee of the Ruskin School, Oxford, and an independent adviser to the Windrush Lessons Learned Review.

Her previous academic posts were in Imperial College, London.

In 2004 she was invested as a Dame Commander of the British Empire in recognition of her contribution to higher education and management research, and in 2006 she was inducted into the International Women’s Forum (IWF) Hall of Fame.
